As an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited animal hospital, we offer a full suite of dental services to keep your pet smiling.
Periodontal Disease & Your Pets
Periodontal disease refers to the infection of the tissues that hold the teeth in place. It is the most common disease affecting cats and dogs, and is often missed by pet owners. When left untreated, periodontal disease can cause permanent damage to your pet’s teeth, gums, and jaw, which can dramatically impact their quality of life. The dedicated Houston veterinarians at Bellaire-Richmond Pet Hospital are here to help you protect your pet’s oral health.
Symptoms of periodontal disease include:
- Blood in saliva or water dish
- Bad breath
- Difficulty eating
- Loose teeth
If you notice that your pet is exhibiting any of these symptoms, give us a call right away to schedule a dental exam. When you bring your pet in for regular wellness exams, we include dental exams in order to stay on top of your pet’s oral health. If it’s been awhile since your pet’s last wellness exam, it’s possible that periodontal disease has begun to take hold on your pet’s mouth. Our Houston veterinarians will get your pet smiling again!
Periodontal disease is caused by a buildup of plaque that moves below the gum line and infects the tissue holding the teeth in place. In the early stages, the plaque buildup can be taken care of by brushing at home or chewing on hard toys or treats. However, as the disease progresses, the buildup of plaque can only be removed by professional cleaning performed under general anesthesia.
Dental Cleaning at Bellaire-Richmond Pet Hospital
As an AAHA accredited animal hospital, your pet is in good hands when they need a dental cleaning under general anesthesia. We are equipped with a full surgical suite and anesthesia monitoring equipment that will help our veterinary team make sure your pet is well taken care of while our dental experts remove plaque buildup and polish your pet’s teeth. After your pet’s teeth have been cleaned and polished, we’ll apply an anti-plaque treatment like fluoride to prevent future buildup and protect your pet’s teeth.
Once your pet’s teeth are sparkling clean again, we will help you learn how to care for your pet’s teeth at home. Regular dental care paired with regular wellness exams will keep your pet smiling for years to come.
